Flying remote control helicopters is actually harder than it looks. But the good news is, necessary skills can be learned with a little bit of patience and a lot of practice. The following tips are intended to help one in preparing to become a pilot of remote control helicopters.
1. Practice with a simulator first to familiarize yourself with the characteristics of RC flight. While a simulator is not the same as flying an actual helicopter, it can still get you acquainted to controlling remote control helicopters. In addition, a simulator will help you develop the needed reflexes.
2. Seek help from an instructor or experienced flyer. Newbies are very unlikely to set up their helicopter correctly by themselves. Remote control helicopters that have been properly set up perform better. Also, with an instructor by your side, you will have someone to answer your questions. He or she may give you tips and point out your mistakes as well.
3. Take baby steps. It is best to learn slowly but surely. If you take a big step when you are not ready, you may crash your helicopter. Crashing may cause you to lose your motivation and confidence. It will also cost you money. So make sure that you have learned a step thoroughly before you proceed.
4. Learn about the basic theory of helicopter dynamics; this will help you understand things better. Remember that a helicopter is different from a plane.
5. Try to pick a large grassy area when flying remote control helicopters. An area with a lot of dirt or rocks may damage your helicopter in case of a crash. If dirt and rocks enter through the carburetor, the engine won't be able to "digest" them as easily as grass.
6. Practice doing small hops up to 6 inches. Pay attention to how your helicopter is trimmed.
7. Practice hovering from 6 inches to a foot. Gusts of wind will make your helicopter climb fast. In this case, don't slam it into the ground, but slowly lower the collective and gradually bring it back down.

It is a great way to meet people and hopefully make many new friends. We all know how hard it can be to find time in seriously busy schedules to meet people and make friends, right? Club members will be able to discuss with you the latest RC issues, the hottest new toys, share tips and techniques and give you advice on the best and safest places to operate your remote control toy plane, helicopter, car, boat or truck. Their websites can provide a great amount of information specific to your area and give you an idea what the club is all about.
Depending upon the type of model or toy you have you will need to check into requirements for operating them at local parks, tracks, waterways and fields. For instance, fields in our area require model RC airplane enthusiasts to be members in good standing of the AMA (Academy of Model Aeronautics). Some fields located within parks also require you to purchase an annual pass in order to use the fields, as well as, being a current member of the AMA. Local clubs will be able to answer all these questions for you.
I went out on the net and did a Google search for clubs in my home town and found four RC plane clubs, five RC car clubs, one RC truck club, one RC boat club, but unfortunately no RC helicopter clubs. Maybe a helicopter club will form soon. I picked random localities, did searches and found that most cities have local clubs. If there are no clubs close to home, maybe you could be the first to start one. A little networking could help you to locate others in your area that might be interested in starting a club.
Go out and do a search in your area and find a local RC club. Most clubs have calendars that list events and meeting times and places. I suggest going to a club meeting, meeting the members and finding out what they are all about. You can visit more than one club if they are available and choose the one that fits you best. You want to feel comfortable with the other members of the club. All that is left is joining and then the fun begins.

Xheli's Esky 900 is an assembled "Bare Bones" Helicopter. That means you must choose and buy your own RC equipment. I used at motor that has more that enough power, so I had to turn down my throttle curve to a maximum of 85% for all around good 3D flights, as you will see in the 3D video. Always searching for an electric helicopter with some weight and mass to handle our winds, I have begun exploring the 500 class helicopters. In this video, I give a look at the Esky 900 helicopter. You will see close-up pictures, assembly tips, and the equipment I used in the assembly of this helicopter. The ES 900 is a fantastic flying machine when set up with the pitch and throttle curves I developed on my test stand. I have videos on my test/training stand and how to make the pontoons.
